Understand Local Visibility and Search Rankings

Learn how Local Visibility tracks your locations' search rankings for chosen keywords across Google result types, and how to analyse and export that data.

Local Visibility helps you understand where each location appears in local search results for the keywords that matter to your business.

Unlike a single website ranking, local search results can change depending on where the customer is searching from. A location may rank strongly close to the business and differently several kilometres or miles away.

PromoRepublic helps multi-location teams measure this visibility consistently across locations and keywords.

📊 What Local Visibility measures

Local Visibility tracks the search position of your locations for selected keywords across supported Google search result types.

Depending on your account configuration and available data, this can include Google Maps, organic search and mobile search results.

Use Local Visibility to understand:

  • Where locations are visible for important searches

  • Which keywords perform strongly or poorly

  • Which locations need attention

  • Whether visibility changes over time

📍 Why local rankings change by location

Local search is geographic. A ranking can change depending on the search point or ZIP code used.

When analysing rankings, always consider the keyword, location being measured, search geography, result type and date the ranking was collected.

🔑 Keywords

A keyword represents a search query you want to track, for example dentist near me, emergency dentist, pizza delivery or kitchen remodeling.

Separate branded searches from discovery searches. Discovery keywords are especially useful for understanding whether customers who do not already know your brand can find a location.

🏆 Understanding a ranking position

A ranking position shows where the tracked location appeared in the selected result type for the keyword and search geography used.

For example, Position 3 means the location appeared third in that tracked result type for that keyword and search location when the ranking was collected.

Lower numerical positions are stronger. Position 1 is the highest ranking.

⚠️ Do not compare ranking values unless the keyword, search geography and result type are comparable.

🗺️ Geographic ranking and grid analysis

Local rankings can vary significantly across a trade area. A geographic ranking grid samples searches from multiple points around a location and shows the shape of visibility rather than reducing the market to one ranking number.

A location that performs strongly near the business but weakens with distance may primarily be experiencing a distance constraint. A location that performs poorly even close to the business may require investigation into relevance, profile data, reputation, eligibility or competition.

🌐 Google Maps and organic rankings

Google Maps or local results and organic search results use different ranking systems. A location can perform strongly in one and less strongly in another, so review each result type separately when diagnosing performance.

🕒 Last Run

Last Run shows when PromoRepublic most recently collected ranking data for the keyword and location.

✅ Always check the Last Run date before interpreting or sharing a ranking.

🔍 How to analyse Local Visibility

Start with business-important discovery keywords and look for differences between locations rather than relying only on a network average.

Useful questions include:

  • Which locations consistently rank in stronger positions?

  • Which locations are not visible for high-value keywords?

  • Is weak visibility mainly at the edge of the trade area or also close to the location?

  • Is the issue limited to one keyword family?

  • Does the same location also perform poorly in organic search?

  • How does the location compare with the strongest local competitors?

Avoid treating one keyword or one search point as proof that an SEO change worked or failed.

📤 Export Local SEO ranking data

Local Visibility data can also be exported for deeper analysis, BI reporting or automated workflows.

Open Data Export and select the Local SEO dataset. Choose CSV for spreadsheet analysis or JSON for structured reporting and integrations where these formats are enabled for your account.

The Local SEO export can include:

  • Keyword — the search query being tracked

  • Ranking — the recorded ranking position for that keyword

  • Location identifiers — identifiers that connect the ranking row to the relevant PromoRepublic location

  • Google location or ZIP code — the geographic context used for the search

  • Last Run — the date the ranking was most recently collected

Use the ranking together with its keyword, location identifier, Google location or ZIP code and Last Run date. A ranking number without this context can be misleading because local search positions vary by geography and time.

For JSON exports, identifiers and other structured fields can be represented as arrays. JSON preserves structured data types and is useful for BI tools, scripts and automated workflows. CSV is generally easier for manual analysis in Excel or Google Sheets.

When analysing exported Local SEO data, segment by location, keyword, keyword group, geography, result type and Last Run date. For a multi-location network, compare the distribution of performance across locations rather than relying only on one network-wide average.

⚖️ Local Visibility versus Google Business Profile Performance

Local Visibility answers “How visible is this location when someone searches?”

Google Business Profile Performance focuses on the activity and performance data available for the connected Google Business Profile.

Use the two together to connect search visibility with customer discovery and action.

🤖 Use AI Assistant

Where AI Assistant is enabled, supported Local Visibility widgets can be sent to the Assistant with Understand this. Use it to ask what a ranking pattern means, which locations need attention, why visibility may be weaker in an area or what to investigate next.

💡 Treat the AI explanation as a starting point and review the underlying ranking data before making final SEO decisions.
